What does the word "thanksgiving" mean? Thanksgiving is the
expression of gratitude and the giving of thanks. Being thankful is
a feeling and a showing of gratitude. To praise means to verbally
express your admiration, to honor and to glorify with song. Being
grateful is feeling and showing appreciation for the kindness and
benefits that God has given YOU!

Thanksgiving Day , legal holiday in the U.S., first
celebrated in early colonial times in New England. The
actual origin, however, is probably the harvest festivals
that are traditional in many parts of the world Festivals
and Feasts. After the first harvest was completed by the
Plymouth colonists in 1621, Governor William Bradford
proclaimed a day of thanksgiving and prayer, shared by all
the colonists and neighboring Native Americans.
The original Thanksgiving Day feast took place in October. It was
moved to November to coincide with the Dallas Cowboys schedule.
Canadians, however, still celebrate Thanksgiving in October, while
celebrating the Grey Cup in November.
Today, our Thanksgiving is the fourth Thursday of November. This was set by President Franklin
D. Roosevelt in 1939 (approved by Congress in 1941), who changed it from Abraham Lincoln's
designation as the last Thursday in November (which could occasionally end up being the fifth
Thursday and hence too close to Christmas for businesses
The typical American
Thanksgiving dinner includes
turkey, dressing, cranberry sauce,
a sweet potato dish, a dish of
beans, and a pumpkin pie. For

used by the Pilgrims, visit "New

have, among their many recipes, one for baked turkey with
chestnut dressing.
